In Game Biography[edit | edit source]

Sometimes, there are good uses for a tiger. An apex predator, able to pursue its prey with a perseverance only rivaled by its bloodlust. The Fascists unleashed theirs in the Urals, accidentally setting loose a depraved man who left nothing but violence in his wake. Sverdlovsk's tiger however, hails from a different breed, and unlike the Germans, his leash shall be short and stiff. Boris Nikolayevich Yeltsin is an ideological man in a notoriously non ideological state. Advocating an aggressive economic policy of privatization, the rapid expansion of democracy, and a swift reunion of Russia. It is his zeal and dedication that led him from relative obscurity to leadership of the democratic faction in Sverdlovsk. However, while he may be eager to implement his new vision, and useful in our quest to end this Russian anarchy, like any tiger, he must be kept in check. Pavel Batov remains keenly aware of the eagerness of Yeltsin's policy, as well as the less savory methods he uses to achieve it. Thus, he has vowed to ensure the military holds equal sway in the new republic. Yeltsin must walk a tightrope, balancing the conservative militarists against his own aggressively republican tendencies. The war for Russia is not yet won, and it remains to be seen if such a task is feasible after all. Yet were he to succeed, Russia will surely be stronger for it. Perhaps no less cruel in its policy, but a free, aggressively capitalist republic nonetheless.

In-game[edit | edit source]

Boris Yeltsin sets Russia on a path towards political and economic liberalization. Yeltsin can give the regional soviets far more autonomy to set Russia on the path towards federalization, relinquish state control of the press, grant universal suffrage to all Russians, allow multiple parties to run in elections, and transition the state away from a junta into a democratic republic. He can break up Sverdlovsk's public enterprises into smaller, private ones to boost competition in the market, invest in industries from the defense industry to the oil industry and allowing minimal rights for workers.

As was the case in real life, references to his alcoholism are made, with his unification super event having the sound of someone pouring a drink (presumably Yeltsin himself), over The Patriotic Song (Russia's national anthem from 1991 to 2000). Amusingly, one event has him sneak away from trade meetings with the American delegation and sneak a bottle of vodka into the bathroom, where a young aide from the US drinks with him - at the end of the event, it's revealed that the aid in question is a young Bill Clinton (who, in real life, was friends with Yeltsin).

Surprisingly, Yeltsin is able to peacefully unify with almost any other Russian warlord at the regional and super-regional stages, the exception being the most authoritarian choices, such as Velimir.
