History[edit | edit source]
First beginning in Ancient Greece, the Games of the Olympiad would see participation all around the Ancient Greek realms, held as a competition to appease the Gods of Mount Olympus, where the games get their name from. The first modern Olympics however, were held centuries later once again in Greece, as the 1896 Athens Olympics, also known as the Games of the I Olympiad organized by the International Olympics Committee or the IOC which was created just two years prior in 1894 by the French Aristocrat, Pierre de Coubertin. The Winter Olympics were introduced in 1920, and the first one was held in Antwerp, Belgium. The latest Summer Olympics were the XVII Olympiad in 1960, held in Rome, while the latest Winter Olympics were the VIII Olympic Winter Games held in the Squaw Valley Resort in the state of California in the United States.
