The colonisation of the Indian subcontinent by the British Empire started in the 18th Century, but the true Modern history of British India, also called British Raj, started in 1858, just after the [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Indian_Rebellion_of_1857 Indian Rebellion of 1857]. This rebellion was caused by the growing discontentment of native Indians in the British East India Company's army, holder of India at this time. Its aftermath was around 800.000 Indian deaths.

After the war, a new system was inplemented in India. The [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/East_India_Company EIC] was not to rule it anymore, instead, the British Crown was given almost total power over the British Raj. After seeing the mistakes of the EIC, the newly appointed Viceroy of India, also called Governor-General, embarked on a series of "progressive" reforms, like the integration of Indians into the government, the abolition of mostly failed attempts at Westernisation, and much more...
