Paraguay's recovery from the War of the Triple Alliance was slow and arduous. The nation remained politically unstable, marked by a series of dictatorships and civil wars.
In the early 20th century, Paraguay became embroiled in another major conflict, the Chaco War (1932-1935), with Bolivia over a disputed territory in the Chaco Boreal region. Despite its smaller population, Paraguay emerged victorious from the war, gaining control of the contested territory. However, the war further hampered Paraguay's economic and social development.

in 1937, the Feberista government collapsed, and the Liberal Party chose Chaco War veteran and General Higinio Morinigo as interim president. Morinigo overthrew the government in a self-coup, turning Paraguay into a fully fledged Fascist State.

Morinigos regime would face its greatest crisis yet, when in 1954, with support from almost all of South America, The US invaded Paraguay but fails. Seeing the opportunity to secure an ally and spread its influence, Argentina aided and supported Paraguay economically but politically, Argentina did not approve of the Fascist Regime. This lead to tension with Brazil.
 
General Alfredo Stroessner seized power through a military coup in 1954. His regime, lasting for 35 years, was characterized by repression, corruption, and a close alliance with the United States. While some economic growth occurred under Stroessner, it primarily benefited a select few, and political freedoms remained severely restricted.
