Central Intelligence Agency

The CIA, or Central Intelligence Agency, is the US' official intelligence agency. Succeding the OSS (Office of Strategic Services), the agency was founded in 1947 as a goal to counter the risk of German and Japanese influenced regimes taking over previously democratic and OFN influenced nations. It is indirectly independent from the American government as it is part of the United States Intelligence Community. It is directed by Allen W. Dulles, which has been at its head since its foundation. The Headquarters of the CIA are situated in the unincorporated community of Langley in Fairfax County, Virginia.

Long before becoming synonymous with American espionage, Allen Welsh Dulles was a lawyer who served the State Department in many European postings. Seeing firsthand the creation of the Nazi Empire in Europe conviced him American isolationism - in any sense of the word - was impossible in the face of world desiring tyrants. Serving as the link between the OSS and the anti-Hitler resistance in Germany during the war, he was not dissuaded from this view as he learned more and more of the nightmare of Europe.
Returning to the States, he critisized the intelligence agencies of the United States as being unable to collect intelligence from enemy nations and proposed to centralize the agencies around the CIA. The Dulles Report sent shockwaves around Washington, as he put the blame of these issues at the feet of the management of the agencies. The CIA then brought him onboard as the director of of covert operations, before he became the director of the CIA itself.
