Tokyo sent the 1s Airborne Brigade under Major General Kinugasa Hayao into the previously unclaimed territory of Marie Byrd Land, which would later be renamed Nobu Shirase Land, after a Japanese explorer who led an expedition to Antarctica in the 1910s. |
