Additionally, the occupied provinces in Northern Ireland were never fully integrated, but organised into the so-called "Northern Counties Special Zone", which has been plagued by guerrilla warfare ever since its creation. Elements of both the Irish Republican Army, the Irish Citizen Army and The Unionists would establish their own zones in the region. Despite this however, they would be contained by the intervention of Neil Blaney, who rules the province using friendly paramilitary groups and terror to maintain order.
Fianna Fail's grip on Irish politics would loosen in the 1961 elections, where for the first time ever it lost its majority in the Dail Eirann, with De Valera retiring to the ceremonial position of President, and his successor Sean Francis Lemass forming a coalition with the Labour Party.
