The First Iraqi War was a short conflict between Turkey and Iraq that took place in 1952.
The Conflict[edit | edit source]
Outbreak of War[edit | edit source]
The conflict began after Turkey invaded the north of the country, reviving its old claims on Mosul, which had been dropped during the interwar years, after mediation by the League of Nations. however, with the end of the Second World War, Turkey began to re-assert the Iraqi forces would put up stiff resistance, until Syrian general Tayfur Sokmen developed a plan to outflank by moving forces through Syria. Iraq sued for peace, ceding the entirety of Iraqi Kurdistan.
The defeat proved to be a disaster for the Hashemites, with support for groups such as Islamists, the communists and the new Ba'athist movement skyrocketing.
