Asunción is Paraguay's Capital, located inland along the Paraguay River.

Founded in 1537, Asunción was once the most important city in the Rio de Plata basin and the seat of Spanish power in the region. It was known as "the mother of cities"- but those days are long gone.
The Asunción of today is important primarily within the landlocked and isolated Paraguay, as it is the only significant urban center and accounts for the overwhelming majority of the nation's GDP, industry, and cultural output. What significance it has is in its location at the heart of a continent; Asunción is a comfortable launchpad for influencing the affairs of the region.
