History[edit | edit source]
When the French left West Africa following their defeat in World War II, the Republic of Dahomey, which operated as a functioning democracy, was established on the former French Dahomey colony. Dahomey was initially stable, however, the situation continued to deteriorate as time went on. Finally, a bloodless military coup was expected to be led by the general Christophe Soglo. But Soglo refused the position, leaving the President's seat open and dividing the army into two cliques - one for the coup and one against it.
