Onega, officially the Anti-Communist Volunteer Guard, is a small Russian warlord state located in West Russia. It borders the White Sea to the north, the West Russian Revolutionary Front to the east, Reichskommissariat Moskowien to the south and Finland to the west.

The state itself was established by Finland after the West Russian War to serve as a buffer between the WRRF and FInland's newly-annexed Karelian territories. They cannot reunify Russia, and in most playthroughs of The New Order they will be annexed by the West Russian unifier once said unifier has defeated their regional enemies.

History[edit | edit source]

Damned Lies[edit | edit source]

The Third Reich had assured the people of the Finnish Republic that the Soviet Union would never again threaten Finland, nor its territorial gains in Karelia.

The West Russian War proved this to be a damned lie. The West Russian Revolutionary Front, remnants of the Red Army in Western Russia nearly managed to derail Germany's new order in Europe. Once the dust had settled, the Finnish Republic found its eastern border occupied by the remnants of the WRRF. Looking only to themselves for safety, Finland turned to... unorthodox solutions.

To the East[edit | edit source]

Russians living in Karelia and around Lake Onega were captured by Finland's new military government. The men were separated from their family, and forcibly drafted into the new Anti-Communist Volunteer Guard. Led by former Red Army General Vladimir Kirpichnikov, this army of the damned would hold the borderland between Finland and the WRRF. Helsinki's dictats were very simple: all the Guardmen had to do was to defend Karelia from bandits and from the communists to the east. Loyal service would let the Guardsmen see their family again.

Freedom[edit | edit source]

Nearly a decade on, the men of the Guard cling on to the promise of seeing their family once more. Their task is a gruelling, thankless one. As they patrol the Arctic land around Lake Onega, fighting bandits and communist infiltrators, the Guardsmen look east with uncertainty. The winds are changing in Western Russia, and it is likely that soon their fellow countrymen will come knocking to recapture the land stolen by Finland. Ill-equipped, the Guard continues its watch. Their service will guarantee their freedom, one way or the other.

Gameplay[edit | edit source]

Onega starts with the following national spirits:

Name In-Game Description Effects
Volunteer Guard The Finnish-sponsored "Anti-Communist Volunteer Guard" dominates our state apparatus. While some would complain about this state of affairs, saying that this makes us a mere puppet to Finland's interests, thus far the partnership works: we fight the communists, they keep us safe, with the promise of more to come later. Defense: +10.0%

Division Recovery Rate: -20.0%

Personnel Cost Factor: -100.0%

Karelian Resettlement Zone With the communists defeated and Finland secure, we have come to an agreement with our former sponsor: we will receive all territorial spoils from the West Russian War, and they will 'encourage' the Russian Karelians to resettle in our lands. Monthly Population: +4.0%

Max Buildings in a State: +10%

Construction Speed: +10.0%

Finnish Influence Finland is an ally to our mission to eradicate the communist and extremist threat to our motherland, nothing less and nothing more. We will not cow to the whims of Helsinki, the army and bureaucracy of Onega serves herself, first, and foremost!

Always, and forever be, if luck be with us.

Factory Output: +5.0%

Grid Power: +3

Dealing with the Bandits The bandits that plague Onega are still assaulting convoys and the populace, a problem inherited from when we were first set up by the Finns. Now, more than ever, we must make sure to secure our logistical situation as well as our internal border, lest we fall to the next Russian faction. Resource Gain Efficiency: -15.0%

Division Organization: -10.0%

Recruitable Population Factor: -7%

Stability: -10.0%

Weak Hold of Government Set up by the Finns in a time of crisis, most of the populace is at best reluctant to join with what they see is a puppet government. Couple that with radicals attempting to incite people to the WRRF, Tsarist or Samaran cause and it spells trouble. We must deal with the political system. Political Power Gain: -20%

Construction Speed: -35.00%

Factory Output: -25.00%

The flag of the Northern Russian Republic, formed if Onega deunifies West Russia.

Onega cannot reunify Russia as that is not the goal Finland laid out for them. However they are one of the deunifiers: if Onega somehow manages to defeat the unifier of West Russia when they attack, Onega will annex the northern reaches of the unifier's land up to a line stretching between Kostroma and Gayny and will proclaim a new democratic republic known as the Northern Russian Republic. Then it will create a string of puppet states out of the remaining land. The Southern Urals will be left intact.

West Russia as deunified by Onega.

They will be able to do something similar if they defeat the West Siberian unifier as well, annexing the Vorkuta region and creating puppet states out of the remaining land. However if Onega manages to defeat the Siberian superregional unifier as well, they will simply annex it - likely because the TNO development team did not consider the scenario.

Capitulation quote[edit | edit source]

"The doorway to Europe lies open - and with it comes the smell of war once more."

Trivia[edit | edit source]

  • The emblem in the centre of Onega's flag was taken from the flag of the West Russian Volunteer Army, a pro-German volunteer army created by the German Empire that served in the Baltic states during the Russian Civil War.
  • The flag of the Northern Russian Republic in the deunification scenario is the same flag as that of the real-life Arkhangelsk Oblast.
