Aïr, officially the Sultanate of Aïr is a small, West-African nation, containing the Aïr Mountains for which it is named. It's government is so decentralized, it practically does not exist, the whole country appearing to outsiders as nothing more than unclaimed land with roaming nomads. The people of Aïr live in tribes, migrating among the dunes, as they have done for centuries, occasionally avoiding German bombs.

The Aïr region in central Niger boasts a complex history, distinct from a singular tribal nation. Its story is deeply intertwined with the Tuareg people and the rise and fall of empires.
Early Inhabitants[edit | edit source]
Rock art (petroglyphs) found in the Aïr Mountains reveal evidence of a prosperous pastoral community during the African Humid Period, a time of increased rainfall. These depictions feature cattle and large mammals, suggesting a well-established society of herders.
Desertification and the Tuareg Migration (3rd millennium BCE onwards):
As the Sahara expanded, the Aïr's climate became more arid. This desertification process led to the southward migration of the Tuareg, a nomadic people well-adapted to desert life. Their arrival marked a cultural shift, with rock art depicting horses and chariots, possibly indicating a more militaristic way of life.
Rise of Agadez[edit | edit source]
A significant development occurred with the founding of Agadez around 1430 CE. A collaboration between Tuareg and Hausa people, the city's strategic location at the crossroads of trade routes transformed it into a major commercial center. This flourishing metropolis became the capital of the Agadez Sultanate, a powerful entity capitalizing on its advantageous position.
Conquest and Decline[edit | edit source]
The Agadez Sultanate's fortunes varied. The Songhai Empire conquered the region in 1500 CE, but its own collapse in 1591 CE allowed Agadez to regain independence. However, the following centuries witnessed a decline in population and economic activity.
20th Century and Beyond[edit | edit source]
The 20th century brought both challenges and opportunities. Devastating famines and Tuareg rebellions displaced populations, while the discovery of uranium deposits near Agadez led to economic growth. Tourism also flourished for a time before renewed unrest brought the industry to a halt. French colonization of the Aïr region in 1906 CE ushered in a period of significant change. Initially met with fierce resistance from the independent Tuareg people, rebellions in 1909 and 1916 were ultimately quelled by French military might. By 1917, the Aïr was incorporated into French West Africa, bringing a degree of stability but also disrupting traditional power structures. The Sultanate of Agadez lost much of its authority, and new French taxes and forced labor policies strained the nomadic Tuareg lifestyle. Traditional trade routes were disrupted, impacting the Agadez economy, while social hierarchies shifted as French administrators favored certain groups, leading to internal tensions.
The French struggled to govern the nomadic population. Imposing a sedentary lifestyle clashed with their traditional mobility, leading to continued resistance throughout the colonial period. The Kaocen Tuareg rebellion of 1916-17 exemplified this struggle. Famines, particularly in the 1930s, further strained relations and highlighted the limitations of French control in the harsh environment.
World War II saw increased French reliance on the Aïr for resources and manpower, while also indirectly fueling Tuareg nationalism. Exposure to new ideas and the weakening of French control during the war years emboldened calls for autonomy. After the war, the desire for self-rule intensified, with the sultanate eventually breaking of from Vichy France. During that time, German air bombings started on the nation.
