Vatican City, also officially known as the Vatican City State, is a landlocked city-state, microstate and enclave with a population of 914, surrounded entirely by Italy. It is home to the Holy See, representing the Roman Catholic Church, the largest Christian church. It is also regarded as the world's smallest country by area and by population.
The country also has a unique political system, with a theocracy as its ideology. This replaced traditional parliaments, district representatives, executives, and many other roles with a system of bishops, with the head being the Pope. Popes often rule as 1 person for a lifetime.
Even if Vatican City was established in 1929 after the Lateran Treaty, it existed as an independent nation in Italy as the Papal States, collaborating with local kingdoms creating alliances and clashing with others. However, as the Northern Italians pushed towards reclaiming the Italian peninsula, it later fell after the capture of Rome in 1870.
